Visit Arles' museums, exhibitions, cultural attractions and archaeological sites on your next stay at Benvengudo hotel and restaurant in Provence...

Arles is a city located in the south of France in the Bouches-du-Rhône region. It was founded in 600 BC and with 2000 years of history, Arles is home to many museums, cultural attractions and archaeological sites that pay homage to the city’s Roman ancestry.

The ancient city is fascinating and its Roman history and beginnings make it a great place to discover. The Unesco World Heritage city made international headlines when a bust thought to be that of Julius Caesar, dating back to 46 BC, was found in the Rhône River as recently as 2008.

Arles has been called "the soul of Provence," and is a popular tourist spot with art lovers, archaeologists, and historians. It is located only 20 kilometres from Benvengudo, a short driving distance from your Provence Hotel & Restaurant.

The Arles Archaeological Museum (le Musée d'Arles et de la Provence Antique)

This Museum is one of the city’s most famous museums and is located on the Presqu’Ile du Cirque Romain. Opened in 1995, it replaced and combined the collections of the former Museum of Christian Art and Museum of Pagan Art. It gained international notoriety when the oldest known bust of Julius Caesar was found on the banks of the Rhone in Arles. This discovery and more than 600 other objects of the past are now on display at the museum. Its exhibits include models of ancient buildings, daily life artefacts from the Roman era, and a variety of art from the prehistoric period to the 6th century AD.

Visit the Arles Archaeological Museum's website for more information about opening hours, admission fees and current exhibitions.

The Musée Reattu (Le Musée Reattu)

The Musée Reattu was created in 1968 and named after the Arles painter Jacques Réattu who bought the building in which to live and work and his dream was to open a residence for artists. The Arles museum is the realisation of that dream and is located on the banks of the Rhône in the former Grand Priory of the Order of Malta, presenting works from the 17th-19th centuries, drawings and paintings by Picasso and contemporary art. The museum organises about three temporary exhibitions each year to introduce its new acquisitions to the public and is focused on exhibiting contemporary art.

Visit the Musée Reattu website for more information about opening hours, admission fees and current exhibitions.

The Arlaten Museum (Le Museon Arlaten)

This Museum was founded in Arles at the end of the 19th century by the poet Frédéric Mistral. The ethnographic Museon Arlaten is a sanctuary for preserving Provence's unique history and culture. Following Mistral's Nobel Prize Award for literature in 1904 and the resulting prize money, he was able to install his collection in the hotel Laval-Castellante which is a wonderful example of 15th and 16th century Provencal architecture. The museum contains costumes, furniture, tools, objects and artefacts relating to religious and superstitious traditions that illustrate life in Provence during the 19th century.

Visit the Arlaten Museum website for more information about opening hours, admission fees and current exhibitions.

The Camargue Museum (Le Musée de la Camargue)

This unique museum is located in one of France's 44 regional nature parks. The museum occupies a former sheep farm in the heart of the Camargue and traces the history of human activity in the Rhône delta from the geological origins of the region up to the present day. The museum is devoted to the agricultural heritage of the area in the 19th century such as stock breeding, hunting, fishing and domestic life, and also features exhibits from the 20th century, notably the construction of hydraulic infrastructure, and the production of wine, rice and sea salt.

Visit the Camargue Museum website for more information about opening hours, admission fees and current exhibitions.
