Local attractions and things to see and do in - les Alpilles…

The "Massif des Alpilles" stretches between the cities of Arles, Salon de Provence and Avignon. The highest point in these"pre-Alps" is 387m, but they rise dramatically, compared to the surrounding landscape. They are made up of limestone and have a distinctive white color. Around Les Baux, the deep red scars you can see in the landscape are remnants of the extraction of Aluminium also called "Bauxite", after Les Baux where it was first discovered in 1821 by the geologist Berthier. The color is due to heavy iron staining of the ore and, now that purer deposits have been found in the world, the original Baux deposits are no longer mined or are in the process of closure.

Les Alpilles is an ideal region for hiking and cycling. Our friendly staff will be all too happy to help you plan your day trip into these magnificant Alpilles ranges.
